Nike is taking on the difficult task of reinventing some of their formerly innovative performance kicks.

In a fresh approach for Spring '13, the brand is applying an "Engineered Mesh" to the Air Max family including the 1, 90, 95, and 97 models. From the look of it, this is the same mesh from your penny jersey back in the day. The Swoosh claims that the perforated pattern improves breathability and flexibility by eliminating extra materials, as well as looking fresh for warmer months.

After Sneaker Report scoped out most brand's spring previews, it's safe to say that this mesh-like material will soon adorn many performance models in months to come. And for Nike, while we're only seeing this "engineered" approach on their lifestyle kicks now, we expect to see this technology shared on their running and training models next year.

Are you feeling this old school approach to technologically advanced uppers? As long as it performs as well as it looks, we're down.
