No. 10 – Brooks Vanguard
The Brooks Vanguard has been going strong since 1976, and today its retro form offers classic style and comfort. While it was once a top of the line performance runner, the last thing you’ll want to do is use the Vanguard for serious running. Don’t dismiss them yet, though, because their grippy Octopi outsole and pigskin/nylon upper make for a great walking shoe. If you're looking for the retro look, the Brooks Vanguard is your answer.
No. 9 – Merrell Road Glove 2
The name says it all. The Merrell Road Glove 2 is intended as a lightweight trail runner, but its snug barefoot feel, waterproof treated upper, and tough Vibram outsole make this a smart everyday choice. Whether you’re walking through urban streets or tearing through trails, the Merrell Road Glove 2 is ideal if you’re looking for a minimal shoe with enough protection and durability to last.
No. 8 – Reebok ZigKick Dual
Those who prefer more cushioning in the heel area will want to consider the Reebook ZigKick Dual. The responsive ZigTech midsole is designed to keep runners moving forward with a springy step, which transitions well to an everyday casual option.
No. 7 – Saucony Shadow
Go retro with the Saucony Shadow. This classic’s reliable EVA midsole cushions your step, while the mesh and synthetic-based upper delivers a lightweight and breathable feel. With a number of colorways to choose from, the Saucony Shadow will freshen up your wardrobe and keep you comfortable at the same time.
No. 6 – Asics Gel-Tech Walker Neo
Many walking shoes are bulky and unsightly, but the Asics Gel-Tech Walker Neo is a rare example of a walking sneaker that doesn’t look like a walking sneaker. The sleek all-black look will pair easily with just about anything in your wardrobe, while Asics’ time-tested Gel cushioning will keep you comfortable during the longest of walks.
No. 5 – New Balance 580
Okay, so you already have a pair of casual-use NBs in your closet. Maybe even a pair of 580s. Forget about those, though, because what you really need this summer is this glowing neon rendition. With colors that assure you’ll be seen and a chunky yet lightweight RevLite midsole, the New Balance Neon 580 is a no-brainer.
No. 4 – Under Armour Micro G Elevate
Designed as a trainer, the Under Armour Micro G Elevate might not be your first consideration for a walking shoe, but it deserves a second look. The upper feature’s UA’s latest innovation, ClutchFit, which wraps around the foot for a lockdown fit, while a full-length Micro G midsole cushions your every step. Further comfort comes in the form of the 4D Foam footbed, which softens and conforms to the exact shape of the wearer’s foot overtime.
No. 3 – Jordan Flightflex
Jordan Brand are no strangers to training shoes, and the Flightflex might be one of their best takes yet. The mesh and synthetic upper is highly breathable, while Flywire cables keep the foot locked down in the event of increased intensity. The Nike Free-inspired Flightflex midsole puts an emphasis on natural movement, and our favorite part of the Jordan Flightflex is the compression-molded foam bootie, which wraps around the food for a snug, cozy fit.

No. 2 – adidas Pure Boost
You may have recently seen pictures of Kanye West strolling around Paris in these Boost-powered runners, and it’s safe to say Yeezus knows a thing or two about sneakers and comfort. Although the Pure Boost is labeled as a running shoe on the adidas website, it’s not quite as equipped as its Energy Boost or Rocket Boost cousins, making it a perfect casual walking choice. A stretchy, breathable upper keeps things cool up top, while Boost cushioning delivers comfort that you truly have to feel to believe.
No. 1 – Nike Flyknit Racer
Hold up, a shoe called a racer as the No. 1 walking shoe? Hear us out. While the Flyknit Racer certainly can perform well as a serious runner, we can’t help but feel it’s better suited as a casual sneaker. For starters, the knitted upper and low-profile sole aren’t particularly durable, so regular performance use could wear them out pretty quickly. On the other hand, if you add them to your rotation as a casual walking shoe, they’ll hold up much better than sneakers like the Roshe Run. Add in the fact that they’re easy to clean, super breathable, and come in almost any color imaginable, and the Flyknit Racer is the clear winner.
