In 1992, Nike took the unprecedented step of using technology from their running shoes and putting it to use on the basketball court. The legendary Tinker Hatfield wanted this sneaker to be different, as he eschewed the bulky, heavily padded upper that was commonplace at the time in favor of a lighter and more reductionist design. The result of Hatfield’s adjustments was the Nike Air Flight Huarache, which emphasized the performance aspect of the sneaker while eliminating everything else.

Gone were the massive, reinforced ankles and the 100% leather composition of the upper. Replacing them was a single ankle strap to allow for greater range of motion, while a neoprene inner booty inspired by water skis ensured that the wearer’s feet stayed secure at all times. The screen mesh incorporated into the upper (a staple of the Huarache cross-trainer) both reduced weight and increased breathability.

From the Fab Five to the Dream Team, these shoes immediately made a huge impact on the court, as they allowed some of the game’s best young players to push themselves to new heights. These are the 10 Best Performances in the Nike Air Flight Huarache.
