That time of year is approaching when we return to the gym as cold and wet conditions start to take over outdoor routines.

To stave off boredom and that winter fitness slump, Sneaker Report hit up personal trainer Lacey Stone to see how she keeps her treadmill routine far from a hamster-like method of training. Don't let Lacey fool you, she is one tough girl that pushed us through speeds and inclines we didn't know were possible without falling off the belt. While your gym may not feature treadmills that supply scenic stimulation via Google satellite and full internet capability (they're EPIC), here are some simple ways to get the most out of the treadmill this winter.

2.

No. 5 - Play with Speed Intervals

Why: The bursts of speed boost your metabolism and the challenge makes things a little more interesting.

When: Timed sequences, start out by trying them for 30 seconds every 3 minutes and build up to 60 second bursts.

Don't attempt If: You are a first time treadmill-er, falling off of the belt at the gym hurts physically and mentally.

3.

No. 4 - Create a Course

Why: Creating a path gives your mind a mental break. Vary the speed as well as incline to create your own "course" and up the ante each run to challenge yourself.

When: We know you already picture yourself somewhere else while you are at the gym, so take it to the full extent on the 'mill. Use your imagination, are you running from a car explosion? Jason? You don't have to tell anyone, but this is much better than counting bricks on the gym wall.

Don't attempt If: You are content without using your imagination.

4.

No. 3 - Change Your Direction

Why: Turning around or to the side on the treadmill works your muscles in a different way, gives you a difference view, and keeps you focused.

When: Carefully at lower speeds.

Don't attempt If: You aren't the most coordinated person in the world. Again, a fall isn't worth it.

5.

No. 2 - Push That Incline

Why: Push yourself to the next level to feel the burn. To try something different, slow down and raise the incline all the way up. Raise your hands above your head and see how long you can keep them up on a high incline. Trust, it's harder than it sounds.

When: A great way to warm up or cool down.

Don't Attempt If: You are trying to impress the hottie two treadmills over. Showboat moves never do well in a gym setting when they're done on a treadmill. Save those moves for the weight room.

6.

No. 1 - Multitask, Multitask, Multitask.

Why: One of the major excuses for not working out is not having time.

When: If you're feeling you don't have the time to squeeze in your daily sweat.

Don't attempt If: You're attempting to run at 13.0 and get that term paper finished. Coordination is one thing, crazy is another.
