First and foremost, Asics running sneakers are all about cushioning and support. But to cater to runners who want less of both for a more “natural” ride, more recently, the brand has introduced the 33 collection, a series of lightweight running shoes that stay true to Asics’ roots, but sport a slimmer frame—shoes like the GEL-Cirrus33 2, and the GEL-Excel33 2.
Now, it looks like Asics is getting ready to embrace the minimalist approach head-on with the unveiling of the GEL-Super J33. A complete redesign from heel-to-toe, the GEL-Super J33 weighs just over 7 ounces, yet offers the same pronation support as other, bulkier Asics runners. Under the thin, flexible upper, the shoe is loaded with FluidAxis technology for a smooth transition. Gel units in the sole provide runners with cushioning and impact protection, while a Solyte midsole offers responsive cushioning in a lightweight package.
With a expected retail price tag of $100, the Asics GEL-Super J33 is slated for an October 2013 release. We’ll have a performance review of the shoe in the coming months.
