Bernard Lagat has won a lot of races and broken a lot of records in his legendary running career. In fact, just this past weekend at the 2013 Millrose Games in New York City, the 2-time Olympic medalist regained the American indoor 2-mile mark with a blistering time of 8:09:49. Even at the age of 38, it’s as if Lagat’s greatness is only getting started. So he’s decided to try on something that’s a bit more challenging—a half marathon.
On March 17, 2013, Lagat will take the starting line (look for him in the front) at the NYC Half, making it the longest distance he has ever raced.
“It’s a big step up in distance, but I think I’ll be well prepared," Lagat said. "Of course, there’s a bit of uncertainty, but that makes it exciting; the challenge is what really appeals to me."
This will be a significant increase from Lagat’s current longest track event of 5000 meters. However, we don’t expect that the world-class middle distance runner will have any problems finding the finish line in his Nikes.
We’ll be bringing you complete coverage of the NYC Half in March.
