For Nike, it isn’t simply enough to create innovative products that will make athletes around the world better—it’s about doing it in a sustainable manner as to reduce waste and leave a minimal environmental imprint on the planet.

As Nike President and CEO Mark Parker put it: “Nike succeeds because we’re obsessed with innovation. We are relentlessly curious about our world and how we can make it better. We apply that curiosity to our sustainability efforts, and we continue to learn what is required for real, meaningful progress.”

Now, you’re probably thinking there’s no such thing as sustainability when it comes to a large-scale manufacturer such as Nike, who puts out more products on a rolling basis than you can keep track of. However a cool new infographic put out by the Swoosh begs to differ. From the mid-90s, when Nike became the first company to join the Apparel Industry Partnership, to its waste-reducing technologies like Flyknit of today, check out the steps Nike has taken over the past two decades to create a more sustainable future.
