KNOW YOUR TECH: Columbia Outdry Provides a New Take on Waterproofing

KNOW YOUR TECH breaks down the scientific technology used in your favorite sneakers and activewear. Let’s demystify your next purchase: today’s technology is Columbia Outdry. Designed to be 100% waterproof, Columbia Outdry uses two thin layers to provide dry comfort in trail shoes, hiking boots, and winter gloves. On paper, thin layers may not sound like the most efficient method of waterproofing, but the engineering behind Columbia Outdry results in an absolutely waterproof bond.

What is it? Columbia Outdry is a waterproof technology used on the brand’s shoes and gloves. By fusing two thin layers to create a one-piece build, Columbia Outdry is fully sealed. It all starts with a breathable, waterproof membrane that is then heat-bonded to the inner side of the outer layer of fabric. This results in a seamless, gap-less construction that is guaranteed to keep water out.

How does it work? Because Columbia Outdry is fully bonded from the inside out, it leaves no room for water to penetrate the gloves or footwear. The unique construction covers stitching, seams, and any other areas where water would normally be able to penetrate. In traditional waterproof garments, the membrane is not fully sealed to the outer layer, which allows moisture to collect in the gaps and essentially renders the functionality useless.

Notable products: Columbia Conspiracy Outdry, Columbia Electro Amp Glove, Columbia Combin Outdry, Columbia Karako Pass Glove, Columbia Peakfreak Enduro Mid Outdry

Bottom line: Whether you’re tackling snowy mountains or just want to keep your hands toasty this winter, consider the bonded waterproofing of Columbia Outdry.
