KNOW YOUR TECH breaks down the scientific technology used in your favorite sneakers and activewear. Let’s demystify your next purchase: today’s technology is Reebok ATV. This heavy-duty outsole design is inspired by all terrain vehicles and designed to perform on any surface, whether it's snow, sand, mud, or grass.

What is it? An innovative outsole design which is composed of nineteen irregular lugs which are made up of durable carbon rubber. A banked design adds support, while an equally durable upper rounds out the package.

How does it work? Instead of traditional outsole lugs or spikes, ATV uses 19 large banked lugs to dig below the top layer of a surface and provide traction on the layer underneath. Each of the 19 lugs functions independently and are beveled at a 28-degree angle to deliver support on any surface. As an athlete's running or playing surface changes, the large, angled lugs of the ATV outsole are able to dig in and get the foot closer to the ground.

Notable products: ATV 19+

Bottom line:  Don't judge a book by its cover; the Reebok ATV design may seem unusual, but it's a function-first approach that puts an emphasis on intense performance.
