KNOW YOUR TECH breaks down the scientific technology used in your favorite sneakers and activewear. Let’s demystify your next purchase: today’s technology is Reebok Hexalite. The shock-dissipating cushioning was introduced in 1990 and has been used on tennis, training, running, and basketball models throughout the years.

What is it? A cushioning technology inspired by the honeycomb, which is one of the strongest yet lightest shapes in nature. The structure is covered by a durable layer of  thermoplastic urethane which helps the setup maintain its shape and performance capabilities.

How does it work? Found to be four times as durable and able to absorb 23% as much energy as EVA, Hexalite works by cushioning the blow of impact and absorbing shock. The honeycomb design is able to dissipate shock over a larger area than EVA or polyurethane compounds, which results in lightweight impact protection and support.

Notable products: Pump Fury HLS, Reebok Question Low, Classic Jam

Bottom line: Although Hexalite technology is considerably dated, it remains a suitable cushioning option for a variety of sports.
