It's safe to say that Olympic champion Mo Farah knows a thing or two about setting records. With a number of British and European records to his name, Farah added yet another one today as the 2013 IAAF World Championships kicked off in Moscow.

In a tight finish, Farah won the gold medal for the 10,000 meter race, finishing in 27:21:71 and edging Ethiopia's Ibrahim Jeilan, who had a time of 27:22:23. Farah's win makes him the first British male to capture the 10,000 meter world title, and gave Great Britain their first medal of the championships. At the 2011 World Champions, Farah took home the silver, but wasn't going to settle for anything less than gold this time around.

Outlining his dedication, Farah told BBC Sport, "I knew I just had to cover every move and the guys were going to go out there to take a lot out of me. I was just digging in, digging in. It was nice to come out here and win it. Training has been really hard; I've spent a lot of time away from my family and when I came home for the Anniversary Games, my little daughter didn't even recognise me. But it's definitely been worth it." Next up for Farah is the 5,000 meter race on Tuesday, where he will look to defend his title from the 2011 event.

On the women's side, Edna Kiplagat of Kenya took home the gold in the marathon race. In the sweltering Moscow heat, Kiplagat showed off her conditioning and endurance as she completed the 2:25:44 stretch. The silver medal winner, Valerie Straneo, looked to have an edge early on, but Kiplagat pushed it to the limit in the final stretch. For Kiplagat, this is her second consecutive marathon world title.

Elsewhere on opening day, Usain Bolt and James Dasaolu advanced to the 100 meter semifinals, which will take place tomorrow.
