When you think of hitting the water, shoes generally aren’t a top priority. But with water sports like stand-up paddleboarding quickly gaining interest, the need for a reliable water shoe grows accordingly. Fortunately footwear brands have caught on and are starting to roll out water-specific sneakers using technology borrowed from running shoes. On such model is the Minimus 70 from New Balance.

As it name suggests, the shoe is a part of NB’s extensive Minimus series—meaning it’s designed with less materials to give athletes the most natural footing possible without going completely barefoot. It comes in a lightweight frame at just 6.9 ounces, but offers protection just the type of protection needed for water sports. It features a breathable mesh upper with synthetic overlays for support, and includes a midsole drainage system to ensure water that comes in has a way back out. The Minimus 70 Water is made from non-absorbing materials, so they shoe won’t take on additional weight by soaking up water. It features a 4mm heel-to-toe drop for relatively even footing—something you’ll appreciate as you try to balance yourself on that board. Other features include an odor resistant finish, and a padded collar for comfort.
