With eight Grand Slam titles under his belt, tennis legend Andre Agassi is widely regarded as one of the game's greatest of all time. His on-court dominance, unique style, and charismatic personality made him one of the biggest icons of the '90s. Despite his high levels of success, he had only captured one Grand Slam singles title, Wimbledon 1992, as he headed into the '94 U.S. Open. But on September 11, 1994, Agassi won his second singles championship as he defeated Michael Stich in the Open finals.
Believe it our not, Agassi was unseeded going into the tournament. No.1 ranked Pete Sampras was eliminated in the fourth round of the event, and Agassi powered past players such as Michael Chang, Thomas Muster, and Todd Martin on his way to the finals. Eventually he would meet Germany's Michael Stich, who Agassi defeated 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. In an interesting twist, Stich's only Grand Slam at that point was the 1991 Wimbledon, one year before Agassi's first major win. When it was all said and done, Agassi prevailed and took home the first of his two U.S. Open singles championships.
Known for his range of attention-grabbing Nike trainers and adidas sneakers, Agassi was with the Swoosh during this period of his career. Specifically, he wore the Nike Air Flare, a versatile model which was noticeably toned down in comparison to his previous styles. The Air Flare featured visible Air cushioning and were re-released in retro form in 2000 and 2007.
