Earlier this month, Sneaker Report highlighted one of Roger Clemens' career achievements, and today the focus turns to another one of the generation's greatest pitchers. On July 26, 2005, surefire Hall of Famer Greg Maddux joined an elite faction of players by throwing the 3,000th strikeout of his career. Only sixteen players throughout history are able to make this claim, including names such as Clemens, Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, Curt Schilling, and Pedro Martinez.
Although Maddux's Cubs lost 3-2 to the San Francisco Giants, the mark left by Maddux was far more impactful than a lone W. In the third inning, Maddux struck out the Giants' Omar Vizquel, officially earning his place amongst a laundry list of legends. Maddux, who was known more for his deadly precision than blazing fastball speed, ended up winning a Golden Glove in 2005, which was the 15th of his career. To make Maddux's achievement even more impressive, he eventually became only one of ten pitchers to strike out 3,000 batters and rack up 300 wins.
Somewhat surprisingly, Greg Maddux never had a signature sneaker. Early in his career, Maddux wore Pony cleats before switching over to Nike models for the majority of his tenure.
