Today in NBA Sneaker History: Russell Westbrook Fends off Spurs in Classic Nikes

Tonight, the Oklahoma City Thunder travel to the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California to take on the 5-3 Golden State Warriors. Golden State is 3-0 at home, and four of their starters are averaging double figures in points, with three players at 15+ points per game. On the flip side, Oklahoma City has one of the most efficient offensive combos league-wide in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The match-up between point guards Westbrook and Seth Curry should prove to be especially exciting, as both men are two of the top players in their position. After meeting another one of the west’s top teams last night in Los Angeles, will the Oklahoma City Thunder be able to pull through on this road stretch? Catch the game tonight at 10:30 eastern on TNT.

Just four years ago today, the Oklahoma City Thunder found themselves on another road trip against the San Antonio Spurs, who, much like the Golden State Warriors of today, were undefeated going into the game. Kevin Durant had a solid showing with 25 points and 6 rebounds, but he struggled from the field, shooting 6-18, and also had four turnovers. It was point guard Russel Westbrook who stepped up with 19 points, 11 assists, and 5 rebounds to power Oklahoma City to a 101-98 road win.

Russell Westbrook is also known for his seemingly endless rotation of Nike and Jordan Brand sneakers. During this November 14, 2009 win, Westbrook wore a Nike Sportswear retro version of the Nike Air Zoom Flight V. This 1997 model was made famous on the court by players like Jason Kidd, was loaded with responsive Zoom Air cushioning, and featured a unique nubbed outsole that was more akin to turf cross-trainers than indoor basketball shoes.
