The Shoes That Won Last Night: Netherlands Eliminates Mexico

The World Cup's Round of 16 kicked off Saturday with Brazil squeezing out a win over Chile after penalties, while Colombia shutout Uruguay. Yesterday's action was equally thrilling, with a late comeback from Netherlands and a Costa Rica shootout W.

The Dutch put an end to Mexico's dreams of the trophy with a 2-1 win that was spurred by two late goals. With Mexico up 1-0 at the start of the second half, Netherlands rallied back, starting with a goal at 88' from Wesley Sneijder. With the score tied up, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (pictured above) pulled off an awesome goal in stoppage time to lock down the victory as Netherlands advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. After allowing just one goal in group play, it looked as if Mexico's dominance would continue, but the late comeback spelled heartbreak for La Verde in the Group of 16.

Costa Rica and Greece battled it out through extra time with a 1-1 tie, leading to a penalty shootout which Costa Rica won 5-3. Bryan Ruiz got Costa Rica on the board at 52', and it looked like they would pull away before a goal from Sokratis Papastathopoulos at 90+1'. From there, La Sele was flawless in the penalty shootout, where goalkeeper Keylor Navas saved the game and helped Costa Rica advance to the World Cup quarterfinals for the very first time.

Be sure to keep it locked right here for ongoing World Cup boot updates.
