Up until 1986, the Connecticut Huskies basketball program had been around for a total of 83 years and aside from the 1948-63 Huskies that won twelve Yankee Conference titles under revered head coach Hugh Greer in 16 completed seasons, Connecticut was pretty much a laughingstock of a college basketball program.
That was until an emerging head coach from tiny Northeastern University down the road in Boston decided to take on the challenge to bring the Connecticut Huskies to relevancy. That man, was Jim Calhoun, and in the 26 years he served as the state’s favorite college basketball coach, he transformed UConn into one of the greatest college basketball programs of all-time.
