Dave Cowens in the Nike Blazer Low

Today in Performance Sneaker History: David Cowens Kicks off Finals in the Nike Blazer Low

The Boston Celtics were eliminated in the first round of this year’s NBA Playoffs, but in 1976 they powered all the way to the Finals. Matched against the Phoenix Suns, the opening game occurred on May 23, 1976. Center Dave Cowens led the Celtics with a huge showing, putting up 25 points and grabbing 32 boards. Boston would go on to win Game 1 120-106 and ended up winning the NBA Championship with a 4-2 advantage in the Finals.

In 1976, footwear options were limited, and Cowens opted for the Nike Blazer Low. Although the model is primitive compared to today’s sneakers, the Blazer Low featured a suitable combination of suede and a rubber outsole. While they’re not recommended for performance use, you can customize your very own Niek Blazer for $125.
