Following the World Cup, the hype around soccer in the US is at an all time high. Don't get us wrong, we know there's always been the hardcore soccer fans in America, but it wasn't until recently that the MLS has really taken off with teams like the Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers selling out games throughout the season.
Jordan Brand has been expanding their line of footwear beyond basketball recently, delving into the running category with the Flight Runner, and rolling out multiple spiked PE's of classic Jumpman kicks for baseball and football, such as the Jordan VI cleats. With the recent boom of soccer in the US, it got us thinking if Jordan could take another step and begin rolling out soccer boots based on their most prolific silhouettes to take advantage of the growing market, and carve out another niche area for crazed fans to latch onto.
The hype around Jordan Brand couldn't be higher, as consumers chomp at the bit for just about every release the Jumpman throws their way. Would there be such a frenzy if Jordan decided to repurpose some of their most popular models toward soccer boots? Imagine for a second the Jordan 11 low (one of, if not the most desired models Jordan trots out) redesigned with spikes and built for the pitch. Would they sell out in seconds? Maybe not internationally, but chances are if they were drop stateside they would sell out in seconds.
Another example of a potential crossover would be the recently unveiled Jordan XX9. The use of a woven upper marks the first time the new tech will be used for a basketball specific performance shoe. Similar to the Nike Magista and other Flyknit models, Jordan Brand took the idea for a woven upper and reinforced it to withstand the rigors and force a shoe takes during a basketball game. The Jordan XX9 can easily be repurposed into soccer boots as well, and bringing the Flight Plate to other sports sounds like a win for everybody.
Carmelo Anthony recently worked out with Real Madrid, and although he did so wearing loafers, it clearly shows Jordan is taking some notice of America's growing passion with soccer. While this is just all speculation, American's passion for Jordan's runs so deep that this could be a huge untapped market for the Jumpman.
After all, why not just give the people what they want?
