Best for: Maximizing ground control on shorter runs

Star feature: Low profile, really comfortable.

I've really been looking for a minimal trail shoe, so when I found out about the New Balance Minimus 10s, I thought I'd give them a try. Summertime is perfect for day trips, so I often escape the city and take the train to Cold Spring, NY—home of some of America's best hiking trails. I'm normally not a fan of the average hiking shoe. Most I've tried are uncomfortable and too bulky for my small feet. So I figured I would see how the Minimus 10s held up on Breakneck Ridge, a hike that includes steep trails and hazards like rock scrambles. It's definitely not for beginners.

From the start, the fit on the Minimus 10 is spot on. I'm usually a 6 in other brands, and these fit like a glove and aren't too tight. I could wear them barefoot, but I like to wear low-cut socks to add an extra layer of protection. On the foot, they're extremely light, and the ripstop upper is really breathable. The ground feel is responsive, and the Vibram sole is one of the star features. It felt secure on all types of terrain. Reaching the top of Breakneck Ridge is no easy task, but I felt comfortable enough maneuvering through rock scrambles with them on my feet. With a few summits under my belt, making it back down was the easy part—I didn't lose my footing once.

Bottom Line: The New Balance Minimus 10 is a solid sneaker for trails. They're really breathable and can handle just about any surface on earth. If you're looking for something on weekend hikes or cross-training jogs, it's a solid bet.
