Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. Those are, in fact, the Detroit Lions quarterbacks in highlighter green jerseys.
Typically outfitted in red, the Lions signal callers will don green jerseys made from 21 recycled bottles. The fiber is made from a company named Repreve, a company in which the Lions have started a new partnership with. This season, Detroit is launching a green initiative in which they hope to achieve a 100 percent recycling rate around Ford Field.
"This initiative is a reflection of the Ford family's commitment to leading in the area of sustainability," Lions president Tom Lewand said. "As an example, through our partnership with Repreve, we will be expanding to 500 recycling bins throughout Ford Field, making it easy for fans and guests to 'make the smart throw.'"
This isn't the first time we've seen such a bight shade of green on the football field, but at least this time it's for a good cause. The Lions QBs will take the field in the recycled jerseys for the team's practice tonight at Ford Field. Fans in attendance will also receive towels made out Repreve's recycled fabric.
