KNOW YOUR TECH breaks down the scientific technology used in your favorite sneakers and activewear. Let’s demystify your next purchase: today’s technology is the Altra TrailClaw outsole. Built for any trail condition, the Altra TrailClaw outsole is not only unique aesthetically, but features an innovative build that allows trail shoes like the Altra Lone Peak 1.5 to excel on the most rugged, unpredictable surfaces.

What is it? The Altra TrailClaw is an outsole setup that combines different traction patterns for a versatile, high traction feel. At the midfoot area of the outsole, the Sticky Rubber compound features strong, slanted lugs for uphill climbs. Towards the front toe area, even larger, "claw"-like lugs are used for downhill traction and safety.

How does it work? The Altra TrailClaw outsole is a fairly simple design. It uses durable, protruding lugs in the midfoot area of the outsole that are slanted to provide grip and confidence as you make your way uphill. On the way down, the Altra TrailClaw outsole makes use of even larger lugs, known as "claws," for extreme traction in all trail conditions and surfaces. The entire compound is composed of Sticky Rubber for high levels of grip.

Notable products: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Bottom line: The Altra TrailClaw outsole makes use of multiple traction patterns to keep trail runners safe and efficient on all surfaces.
