In a sudden and surprising twist, Helena Costa has decided to resign from her post as head coach of French soccer club Clermont foot just a month after accepting the job.

Costa was set to become the first female coach of a professional men's team in the top two tiers of any European League when she was was appointed to the job last month. No explanation has been given for Costa's sudden change of heart.

"I deeply regret this situation. I thank all those who have supported me and I am most grateful," said Clermont president Claude Michy. "The operation of the club will continue with other stakeholders to prepare for the new season."
