Thinking of running the Barkley 100? Then you better bring your ultra shoes.

Every year in the rugged hill country of Tennessee, runners attempt to finish what is considered by many to be the toughest road race in the world. Just how hard is it? So hard that only 14 people have ever crossed the finish line in the race's 30 year history.

Almost entirely off trail, the race consists of five 20-mile loops that must be completed within a 60 hour time limit. At roughly over 65,000 feet of elevation gain, the course more than doubles the height of Mt. Everest. In filmmaker Brendan L. Young's short documentary, we get to meet the athletes who are daring enough to compete in this year's running of the race. Check out the documentary above and head over to The Atlantic for more info on the Barkley 100.
