Kenyans Mutai, Jeptoo Win 2013 New York City Marathon

Kenya once again showed why its one of the world’s most dominating forces in distance running, as two of its homegrown athletes—Geoffrey Mutai on the men’s side and Priscah Jeptoo on the women’s—broke the finish tape in the 2013 ING New York City Marathon. More importantly for us, however, two heavy-hitting footwear brands—adidas and Nike—split the podium in Sunday’s race.

For one of the most anticipated races of the 2013 marathon circuit, 32-year-old Mutai laced up in a pair of adidas adios Boost (a shoe that has quickly become a go-to choice of elite marathoners despite being released just earlier this fall, while women’s champ Jeptoo went with a Nike shoe that has racked up its fair share of marathon titles), the Nike Zoom Streak 3. While there was the expected variety of different running shoes represented in the race, the Top 20 was dominated by the two aforementioned models.

Getting back to the runners, Mutai finished with a time of 2:08:24—good enough to earn him his second straight NYC Marathon title dating back to 2011 (The 2012 race was cancelled). For Jeptoo, who clocked in at 2:25:07 and had to fight her way to the front of the pack, it was her first-ever win in New York City and her second marathon title of the year (London being the other).
