We've already covered the fact that 2006 was a milestone season for pitcher Curt Schilling. That was the year he reached 3,000 strikeouts, forever cementing him as one of the greatest at the mound. The year 2001 was equally prolific for Schilling, who helped lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to the 2001 championship. This was the second World Series win of Schilling's career, with the first coming in 1993 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Since then, he's also won in 2004 and 2007 with the Boston Red Sox.
Not only does he have a fistful of World Series rings, but in 2001, Schilling was a key factor in the Diamondback's victory. He and Randy Johnson were honored with Co-MVP recognition for the 2001 World Series, and Schilling's performance on October 9, 2001 would have been enough to earn him consideration. In Game 1 of the NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals, Schilling went the distance and allowed only 3 hits as Arizona won 1-0. From there, Arizona topped the Atlanta Braves and finally the New York Yankees in the World Series.
