Carlos Delgado in adidas Cleats

Today in Performance Sneaker History: Carlos Delgado Blasts 9 RBIs Against Yankees in adidas Cleats

Carlos Delgado is one of the most prolific MLB players of the last two decades, putting in work for the Toronto Blue Jays, Florida Marlins, and New York Mets. Delgado played professionally for sixteens years, setting the record for the most home runs and runs batted in among Puerto Rican players. Although Delgado would officially retire in 2009, just one year prior he was showcasing some of the strongest hitting of his career.

On June 27, 2008, the Mets traveled to Yankee Stadium to write yet another chapter in the Subway Series. The Mets would end up rallying to a 15-6 victory, due in part to Delgado’s outstanding batting. Before this game, Delgado had just 35 RBIs in the season, which was somewhat uncharacteristic for the aging star. But something about the Yankees-Mets rivalry must have lit a fire under Delgado, because he exploded with nine RBIs on the night. That’s right—in one night, Delgado batting in nearly a third of his season RBI total. The nine RBIs stands as a New York Mets record for most in a single game.

Although Delgado was never awarded with his own signature model,  the three-time Silver Slug Award winner always kept a quality pair in his locker. For this record-setting game, Delgado wore a pair of black/white adidas cleats. Although this 2008 model has since been discontinued, you can shop the latest from adidas Baseball here.
