It's that time of year again, when runners are forced to take their routes indoors. Avoid treadmill boredom this winter with Outside Interactive's Virtual Runner app.

This is Google Maps for runners. The app allows users to download videos of various running courses onto their iPads or large HDTV's with Apple Airplay capabilities, allowing users to select from a diverse range of locations, from a coastal path on the Great Barrier Reef to a balmy Bali trail, as well as more expected routes like Central Park in NYC and Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. The Virtual Runner makes the experience all the more real by gauging speed according to the user's running pace and including sound from the route (birds chirping, anyone?).

With a shoelace footpod and a wireless receiver from iPads, runners can travel from their living room via the Virtual Runner.

Available for $10 at the iTunes store, with videos ranging from $5-$10.
