You thought you were doing a proper, effective plank? Think again. As the plank was first introduced, results came from those who planked longer. But are you really gaining fitness progression? Well it could be as pointless as cranking out a crazy number of sit-ups.

The Folks over at Equinox has given us the real planks that we should be doing to attack the general core muscle to its full potential. “The logic behind these planks is the multi-directional aspect. We move in three different planes of motion in everyday life. For example, when was the last time you got out of bed in a perfectly straight line? You probably rolled to the side, and pushed yourself up with an elbow. The body is designed to function synergistically to conserve energy and allow us freedom of movement,” says Tier 4 trainer Josh Stolz.

In the gifs above Soltz breaks down every exercise for you. Try them out, at your own pace though. According to Soltz, It’s better to work them into your current and regular exercise routine based on you fitness level. These planks gradually increases in difficulty, so don’t just hop into the hardest ones if you’re not ready to attack them.
